Architectural Designer

Jialu Chen is an architectural designer with a background in Digital Media Art, currently pursuing a Master's degree at the Manchester School of Architecture in the United Kingdom.

Her research and practice focus on integrating multifunctional and age-friendly designs within confined spatial configurations, alongside the adaptive reuse and regenerative transformation of existing architectural structures.

The Retreat Activity Centre is a warm community space dedicated to helping people slow down their pace of life, strengthen interpersonal connections, and share personal stories.
In a world that often feels fast-paced and overwhelming with stress, we have created a tranquil and peaceful environment to support people in maintaining emotional well-being, fostering social interaction, and achieving personal growth.

Since the centre is located in a small town with a large elderly population, all indoor facilities have been designed with age-appropriate features and equipped with numerous accessibility amenities.
Additionally, to preserve the shared urban memories of the town's residents, the original structure of the building has been retained; parts of the original building's exterior facade and the characteristic red bricks—an original construction material of the building—have been incorporated as key design elements in our renovation plan.

The Ground Floor and First Floor of the centre host a variety of inclusive activities and offer rentable office and exhibition spaces. These spaces accommodate mindfulness practices, creative workshops, health seminars, and social group activities.
The Second Floor and Third Floor feature a street-facing stage adjacent to ramps and leisure green spaces, encouraging passersby to come in for socializing, dancing, and relaxation.
The centre is committed to providing every passerby with an unforgettable 5 to 10 minutes of "temporary stopping" time and space.
